The aim of this expo is to inspire and encourage students and also provide education on alternative entry pathways into university, such as scholarships, cadetships or further opportunities post-HSC. Leading universities will be present at the expo giving students a chance to explore different programs that may open doors of opportunity for their future.
Presented by the KARI Community Programs team, Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander students will get a chance to talk to representatives from top Australian universities and explore what alternate entry pathways are available.

What can you expect from the Expo?
The Expo provides the chance to meet with representatives from various universities and explore the different entry pathways on offer specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
The universities in attendance are ready to provide information, answer questions and they’ll have knowledge and experience about alternative entry pathways. These special programs offered by the universities can make it easier for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander student to enroll and be accepted at University. Meaning even if conventional pathways aren’t an option there are still doors that can be opened. The Expo takes away much of the stress associated with trying to locate university entry requirements, and makes starting your educational journey an enjoyable experience.
This expo give Western Sydney First Nations students the opportunity to think big when it comes to their education.
As a teacher, parent or carer with First Nations students, why should you attend?
At the Expo, your students will be amongst community, in a safe and supportive environment, which encourages active participation. For students who do have an interest in tertiary education it’s an opportunity to find out, exactly what to expect with applications, enrolment and further support.
If you have students who aren’t so sure, and maybe haven’t thought about life after school and what career options they’re interested in, they will also have a chance to think big, and find out about possibilities, they possibly didn’t realise existed.
It can always be additionally motivating and eye-opening for attendees to hear first hand stories and experiences from existing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander University students and participants of Cadetships.
We’ve often received feedback from past attendees, that prior to attending they weren’t aware of alternative pathways and they hadn’t even considered any tertiary education.
What are ‘Pathways’ and ‘Entry Programs’?
Pathways come in various forms such as additional courses or tests which help strengthen an application if a student’s ATAR doesn’t reach their desired course level. Additionally, Indigenous pathway programs are tailored for Indigenous Students who haven’t completed secondary school, yet still wish to go to university – these include those not receiving an ATAR score or someone needing extra support due to a lower ATAR rating than required for preferred studies.
Indigenous pathway programs into universities are open to students who:
- Haven’t completed secondary school
- Are not receiving an ATAR
- Are receiving an ATAR
- Don’t have the required ATAR for their preferred course
- Mature aged students
Each university has a different pathway and different requirements, so it’s best to talk to them directly and seek the information you need.
What are ‘Cadetships’?
A Cadetship is a great way to jumpstart your career, combining paid on-the-job experience with academic training over the course of 18 months to two years. Companies are responsible for contracting registered Training Organisations (RTOs) who will provide cadets with nationally recognised qualifications up to Advanced Diploma level – and they’ll be guaranteed employment by their employer at least part time during that period! It’s an amazing opportunity for young people looking to take their professional life in new directions.
If a student is looking for an opportunity to gain real-world work experience in a supported environment, then considering a Cadetship might be a great option.

Although our Community Programs team would love to know your school is attending, there’s no need to register. Just turn up on the day from 9am.
Nothing! It’s absolutley free for you to attend as it’s part of the KARI Foundation’s provision of services to the community. KARI is hopeful Aboriginal Students will have an opportunity to discover new pathways to further study, they didn’t realise were possible.

If you’re coming by car, there’s plenty of free parking available at the Liverpool Catholic Club.
